It is a long time since any general news has gone out from my computer. There are many things to take up one’s time and in between we need a little sleep! Today finds me in the family home at Powell River. [Personal details of Mike’s mother redacted]
We have just finished a most wonderful convention season. Our Lord has been so good to us. Perhaps some would have felt there was a ‘crisis’ in the kingdom but that is not happening. This is God’s kingdom and everything is very much under His control. Quite a number of folks made their choice during the five conv’s and a nice number were baptized also. The ‘grand finale’ was Sunday of 2nd Didsbury where the crowd was huge. One of the brothers in the mtg shed thought there were over 1300. It was suggested that perhaps it was the second largest convention gathering ever in Alberta. There are lots of friends in the area of course but it just seemed to me that God wanted to make it very clear that ALL is well in HIS kingdom.
We are delighted to have two new names on our workers’ list. Keidron Hughes and Cailin Willis both started two months ago at preps, and from all reports have done very well. Several from our staff are leaving permanently or pro-tem. Cheryl Lumley and Sandra Perry have moved to BC, Michael Moulson is moving to Eastern Canada as of today, Jason Gregg is already in Slovakia for a one-year stint on a young people’s work/travel visa, Eden Dell is hoping to get another two-year visa to help out in Sweden and Gena Gibson will soon be leaving on a work/travel visa to spend one year in Korea as an exchange for Reh Lee who is here to help out with our ‘Korean’ mission. A few years ago, a Korean couple met some of our friends and it has led to 7 people making the wise choice so far. There is still more Korean interest but most of those who are left don’t have much English.
A few gems from convention….
1…A child’s prayer…Help me to be strong like David and not like Goliath
2…Fear a hard heart more than hard experiences
3…Sheep have enemies but they do not make enemies
4…If you need to cross the city you don’t wait until all the lights are green. You start out and then deal with each one as it comes. Something might seem overwhelming but take it one ‘light’ at a time

I’m so disgusted that I won’t be able to write eloquently but I’m sure more will be along soon to put their thoughts on here. For every single person who attended these conventions, please know that your choice to go and your presence gave this overseer the confidence to say these things and shove victims and survivors under the rug. This is complicity. You will be judged on earth and in heaven by the choices you are making – do you want to be on the “Nothing to see here, get over sexual abuse kids” side of history? Really? You gave ammunition to the wolves against the victims: men, women, and children who have been assaulted in the most terrible ways that we can’t even imagine. Your attendance told the overseers that all is usual, nothing to worry about despite the huge numbers of victims coming forward.

Wow – this guy Hassett really needs to take off his rose colored glasses and put on his reading glasses so he can read what Wings posted this morning regarding CSA/SA issues in Washington and Carolina. Looks like “business as usual” in the land of the frozen tundra.
Wanted to add, one of my favorite lines in “Rose Colored Glasses” by John Conlee is “these rose colored glasses that I’m looking through, show only the beauty, cause the hide all the truth”. Maybe Hassett can get this song added to “Hymns: Old and New”.

Edgar – totally agree with you 100%. I am very ashamed of my association with this group for over 60 years and for promoting it to friends and coworkers. Just thankful that God got me and my wife and our kids out before It was too late. I believe that God will forgive us. Just will never get those wasted years back. But, the tribes never got those 40 years in the desert back either. Just need to trust in God.

Skip – I was referring to the post on Wings this morning titled “Olympia, WA Overseer Elder Congregation Meeting”. In general, the back and forth discussion between the overseers and the congregation was about the way CSA/SA in the group was handled in the past. Specifically, one person made the following statement: “We have had our trust rocked. How can we trust that you’re going to do the right thing? Story of his daughter on the trail at Olympia convention, nearly raped by a brother worker”. This horrible attack from a male worker on this girl is apparently why the Olympia convention owner announced in the Wings post dated 8/3/2023 that the “WALKING TRAIL will be closed promptly at 6:30 pm”. The owner listed a bunch of other safety measures that gave me the creeps. Not sure if going to convention is worth it anymore. Each person has to make that decision.
My family left the church a couple months ago. I just have to say the longer I’m away from it the more I realize how arrogant many of these people are. I was arrogant to and didn’t really realize it at the time. Thank God for revealing this to me.
Brian — you said it well. “…how arrogant many of these people are”. I was raised in the group and was a third generation. It was all I knew. It took an extreme, personal event that made leaving my only option. Now I am so thankful! I can now live by the Word of God, and the example of Jesus Christ my Lord. No longer do I need to be subjected to such ” gems” as, “If you need to cross the city you don’t wait until all the lights are green. You start out and then deal with each one as it comes. Something might seem overwhelming but take it one ‘light’ at a time”. What does that even mean? What is wrong with simply teaching the wonderful, God’s Word, directly from the BIBLE. What is with this group, they cannot teach the actual Word of God!!! They have to come up with their own ” gems”. God is very clear when it is stated in Deuteronomy 12:32 KJV, “What thing soever I command you, observe to do it: thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it”. This means that one should not add to, or take away from the Word of God. When humans live by their own cute little ” gems”, and not the Word of God, that is what humans reap, and the “gems” are what they will die by. Not with the Powerful Name of Jesus. Everyone is seeing in real time what the “twisted truth” is reaping. And, you are certainly witnessing the arrogance of humans.
So true. Not only did they abuse us, or our family members or friends, they spoon fed us these gems and expected us to be “faithful” another year. No wonder we were so spiritually starved!
Mikes letter completely disregarding the uncomfortable issues at hand is the exact mindset that has CREATED the CSA issues of today.
The example that Mike Hassett exibits here of completely disregarding uncomfortable reality — pretending it doesn’t exist .. is a perfect example of the same reasoning behind the fact that sexual abusers have gone unreported — and thus have been free to prey on new victims.
Victims then true to the “disregard negative suggestion policy” (that Mike clearly demonstrates her) have been shamed and punished for uncomfortable allegation! A rather sickening and imoral mindset.

Seriously! I could remind him of a multitude of coverups down through the years in the ministry and the fellowship. I also know that there are current allegations and open RCMP files in Alberta. However, I would probably be wasting my time telling Michael what he already knows, because word has it that he deletes emails without reading them.
Any overseer who is denying the problem likely has something to hide.
My thought as well. At the very least, there are rumours of coverups when he was in South America.
The RMS Bruer has hit the iceberg…the hull split wide open….many are in pain and confusion…sinking…sinking…..but “all is well” and “with that I’ll leave you”.
The person, or people/ workers that stated these “gems” from convention should be completely and totally humiliated. Obviously, the opposite is true. The head worker found these “gems” to be the uppermost points of the whole convention. I can’t shake the foolishness of this blather. It is just long winded talking without making any sense. Take the gem, “Sheep have enemies but they do not make enemies”. What does that mean? The best I can figure the point is, we are to be like sheep and not make enemies? That’s the best guess I have. I can just see people writing that down! Shaking their head in agreement. So profoundly said. The Bible makes it clear in 1 Peter 5:8, “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour”. We have to make the devil our enemy! If we are friends with the devil, yes, the devil will devour us. These ” gems” are very dangerous and come from people that have no business speaking to a large crowd looking for Spiritual guidance. It’s sickening that each of these “gems” actually is backwards, and are most definitely, not Biblical! That convention, with these types of things being said, twisting The Word of God just ever so slightly, is the play ground for that roaring loin. They cannot teach the actual Word of God. That would expose them, and all the ancillary customs that are imposed, or the primary activities of the organization. Christ Jesus Words were so refreshing, simple and true. But you will not hear them at convention. Instead you get “gems”.

How could anyone write this letter and state everything is great in the kingdom??. When it certainly is not , here on the east coast there are problems as well as world wide problems with coverups and abuse…csa/sa etc etc
A quote widely attributed to Mark Twain, goes something like ‘It is far easier to fool someone, than to convince someone they’ve been fooled’. Oh, how true. The numbers of attendees at the convention (which Hassett seems to be so proud of) have nothing to do with the scriptural veracity of the sermons, or the recognition of the abhorrent problems within the ministry. Maybe people were looking for honesty, a way forward? And didn’t get it? Or maybe they did, to their satisfaction, and will plod forward, convinced that this ministry is pure and not rife with child sexual assaulters, women assaulters, and overseers who run cover for them? Maybe they will continue to believe their salvation is in the hands of these workers? This is just a blip, caused by outsiders, worker haters, etc,etc.
I posted yesterday about JA’s April 29 ‘Letter to Workers and Friends’. He mentions Dean Bruer, and then 3 other workers/overseers in the northwest who had been removed due to child sexual assault in a 1 month (approx) period. Then he stated “I would say there was no connection between these situations apart from human nature”. No connection? Really? No connection apart from a cultish, secretive, abusive religion that is a fertile ground for pedos, encourages ministers to stay in homes of the faithful with young children, and then relies on intimidation (don’t tell & don’t question us and step into darkness…), and has a network of overseers that apparently have vowed to run cover for the abusers. This has been going on for decades, but the blissful ignorance of the faithful, and the willful denial of those who know the truth (small t) will apparently keep this going forward, albeit with somewhat smaller numbers. I guess this is the ‘winnowing out’ I heard of as a child?

Brilliant piece with a little gallows humor to boot. Ohio and Michigan must be in fine shape too since leadshop had not said one word about CSA. With Yellow Springs Ohio convention this next week, wonder if they plan to let Don Reynolds attend? If so, the trails need to be closed 24/7. May not be a bad idea anyways.

Mike Hassett, if all is well in Gods Kingdom, then this ministry and fellowship is surely not a part of Gods kingdom. We are definitely in a crisis.
You know it, I know it, and even though you and others have done their best to keep it hidden , most members know it.
You are trying to minimize this horror, it’s not going to work for Gods true people.
All you’re going to have left are wolves, yes in sheep’s clothing, but the difference now is , we have learned to recognize them.
Micheal, didn’t include that a certain Mr. Good from Red Deer, Ab. was removed from Didsbury #1 Thursday am because he has allegations of CSA against him whilst in Eastern Canada. This information is logged on Facebook.
Possibly all was well with Micheal H after this incident.

EG also had allegations years ago which caused him to be removed from the ministry, but the reason was never made public, and children were never protected from him.
